PPSC MIDLANDS MEETING...

Next Tuesday, November 15th at 7:00pm, David Junker will be presenting the program for the PPSC Midlands Monthly Meeting at Clark Berry Photography's Studio in Lexington, SC. Thanks to Patty Hallman, Hallman Photography, for putting this meeting together!

Photo by David JunkerHe'll go over his formulas for mixing ambient light with flash and for creating different background looks just by changing lighting ratios. He also mixes different lighting instruments and uses reflected light to create unique effects. David says of his presentation, "There's a lot of variety that can come from a white cyc wall. I learned some of these concepts from Zack Arias and added my own twist to some of it. This isn't necessarily the single correct way to accomplish a particular lighting style, but it's the way I do it. I've made use of the equipment available to me (some expensive and some cheap and some even homemade) and have come up with some ways of lighting my subjects that have been successful for me."

Anyone who has already attended a PPSC meeting may either make a $10 contribution to the PPSC or OR bring a friend (another non-member) and both people may attend for free. The 2012 PPSC Convention is fast approaching!

PPSC 2012 Convention LogoMark your calendars for February 3-7, 2012 and join tons of other photographers from South Carolina (and a few from other states) for five days of fun and learning about the business and techniques of running a professional photography business. We'll gather at the Embassy Suites in Columbia, SC to explore new industry trends and discover ways to stand out in the ever-expanding field of photography. Become a "Rock Star" photographer by improving your skills and attracting more clients. If you aren't a member of PPSC, you should join now and take advantage of this amazing opportunity. Speaking of rock stars, there are several star speakers lined up to present workshops at the convention. You'll also get to peruse (and possibly salivate over) cool new gear and products and take advantage of specials offered by the vendors at the trade show. You won't want to skip out early either because we'll be wrapping up the weekend with an awards banquet, and YOU just might be one of the award recipients, but you'll have to enter the print competition! Stay tuned to PPSC for more info and hotel discount information.
I look forward to seeing many of you there!

Hello!! "Holding Faith" by Clark BerryOK, so here we go again...THE SHOOTOUT IS NEXT MONDAY, OCT. 24 IN WHITMIRE! There was a problem with the date on the Facebook event which had indicated the 17th...it's back to the 24th (which is what went out several weeks ago to members on the listserve). This is actually a combined monthly meeting between the Upstate and Midlands districts (of course Coastal members are always welcome!) All professional photographers are invited to attend this event, so come out to support the PPSC and your fellow photographers!
photo credit - Patty HallmanPatty Hallman (www.hallmanphoto.com), Clark Berry (www.clarkberry.com), and David Junker (www.muse10photography.com) will be having a shootout ON THE 24th and will be showing off the images after the shoot. We'll go through the entire workflow from lighting, composing, shooting and finishing the images in Lightroom displayed on a projection screen. This'll be a great opportunity to see how different people work and be able to ask questions and share stories. Please bring $5 for pizza and drinks following the shootout!

Upstate Meeting Monday September 26th, 2011 6:30pm

The next Upstate meeting has been lined up!

It will be hosted by David Junker, Monday, September 26 at 6:30 pm at Muse 10 Photography Studio in the FishEye building near downtown Greenville:

802 Augusta Street
Greenville, SC 20605

(overflow parking next door at "The Front Porch" and the empty lot beyond it)

The meeting will be a "Show and Tell" of images and will allow those who participate to show off images they are proud of and get some friendly suggestions and encouragement.

You don't have to claim the images if you don't want, but it's OK if you do and want to speak about it or tell the story behind it. There will be a panel of "judges" available to moderate and give unbiased feedback regarding photographic issues.  THIS IS NOT A PRINT COMPETITION!!! It's simply a great way to share your work, and be inspired by work that your fellow photographers are doing.

We MUST encourage one another and help each other grow both creatively and technically in order to strengthen the professional photography industry, and this is one great way to do that!

We plan on getting started at 6:30pm.
PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN TAILGATE TYPE CHAIR OR FOLDING CHAIR.
We won't have enough chairs available at the studio for everyone, so grab a couple if you have them so that those who don't may use one.

You may also bring snacks to share if you would like.  Drinks will be provided.

Everyone is encouraged to submit up to 5 images in JPEG high quality (10)format, sRGB, 2000 pixels on the long dimension.  They do not have to be prepared with borders and digital matting like print competition, although you may submit them that way if you prefer. DO NOT PUT YOUR LOGO OR NAME ON THEM!  If you feel compelled to bring printed pieces of art for whatever reason, you must also bring them in digital format so that everyone can see them projected.

Images may be emailed to David Junker, david@muse10photography.com
or you may bring them on a USB drive when you come to the meeting.

I look forward to seeing everyone again (and their fantastic images!)

Sincerely,
David Junker

Costal Meeting Monday September 19th, 2011

What would you do in a situation when the client is in "bad" lighting and this is the only time you can photograph them?  Normally we like to control the lighting in whatever situation we find ourselves, but what if we are forced to shoot in bad light?  You can’t always exert total control over every situation you find yourself in.

If you cannot handle the above situation, you must attend the next Coastal meet on September 19 at 4pm in Georgetown presented by Jeanne Richardson.  She will demonstrate lighting the subjects in bright afternoon sun, complimenting the subject and recording image files great enough for wall portraits.

We will meet at 4pm at Jeanne’s studio in Georgetown and immediately leave for a predetermined location where we will encounter bad light and learn how to deal with it.  Don’t miss this unique opportunity to learn from one of the most talented and resourceful pros in South Carolina.  Mark your calendars for September 19 and meet us there.  We all need to learn this important skill.

Upstate Meeting Thursday August 18th, 2011

Hello All!

Just wanted to introduce myself to those of you who don't know me, and say hello to all of you as the new PPSC Upstate District Chairman. I'm extremely excited about the future of the PPSC, specifically in the Upstate area, and am here to do whatever I can to help. I welcome suggestions and ideas, and most of all, the chance to sit down with another photographer and exchange ideas and stories over a cold beverage. (Cold beverage not optional :) I've already learned tons from many of you, and want to soak up as much as I can from everyone else. I think it's an understatement to say that people in the PPSC genuinely care for the success of the photography industry and want the best for their peers and colleagues.

This'll be a great opportunity now that the Lamarr School is over and we're all craving more great knowledge and experience!

"Gregg Martin, SC Photog of the Year, will be holding a workshop on Wedding and Bridal posing on Thurs. Aug, 18th.....with an emphasis on Flow Posing the bride and groom. This will change the way you pose at weddings. Gregg will also cover group posing as well as options for groomsmen and bridesmaids. Time permitting he will touch on family portrait posing as well. Come one and all to Greenville on the 18th (at...) and enjoy fun, fellowship, and a little learning...

Class will start at 6:30 and we'll plan on eating somewhere close at 5:30.

Make your plans now to come join us."

PPSC MEMBERS FROM ALL DISTRICTS ARE WELCOME!!! The more the merrier. Any non-members are also welcome, and if anyone has attended as a non-member before, please bring another non-member with you and come have a blast!

Program starts at 6:30 and is at David Junker's studio (Muse 10 Photography) in the FishEye building in downtown Greenville. Address is 802 Augusta Street, Greenville, SC 29605. We'd like to get a tentative headcount if possible, so email David privately if you are planning on coming. david@muse10photography.com

Costal May 16, 2011 Meeting

Hi Everyone,
Just a reminder that we are meeting in Georgetown at Jeanne's Creations this Monday, May 16 for our May meeting. Hope to see everyone there.
This is going to be a very informative meeting. Steve Roos is going to be talking about making your own gear. Everyone is sure to get some great money-saving techniques. We were talking last night about a couple of things that I have made, one of which is a flash bracket that holds two speedlights next to each other.
We are to have dinner at 5pm at the Mexican restaurant next to Jeanne's place - El Cerro Grande and start the meeting at 6pm and finish at 8pm. Jeanne's studio is at 825 Church St in Georgetown so put it on your calendar and we'll look forward to seeing everyone again.

Costal Meeting April 25th 2011

Hi Everyone....

We have a fantastic meeting on tap for Monday, April 25. The lovely, talented and most of all, resourceful Steve Roos is going to put on a program that will benefit all who come. He will be showing and teaching about HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN GEAR and showing gear he has made or modified to make his studio more efficient and cost effective. This promises to save us all money which everyone can use. Please mark your calendars. We will meet for dinner at a to be determined close-by restaurant at 5pm and start the meeting at 6pm and finish by 8pm....

I'm asking everyone who is planning to come to please bring your own chair because the studio space we are using has no seating available.

Carmen Ash stepped up to the plate and offered us her shooting space in Myrtle Beach for this meeting.. It is at 407 79th Ave North in a strip mall off Porcher Drive close to an Eye Care Place. Turn in by Northwood Chiropractic and this building is the 3rd door on the right. Park out front and walk around back and we'll prop open the door.

Everyone also please bring a cost-saving tip to share with the group.

Also the Midlands and Upstate are, as always, welcome to join us.

Come on out for a fun and informative meeting

Thanks

Midlands Background swap/sale Sunday June 5th, 2011

Thanks to all who came out for the background swap/sale at Shannon Mercer's studio last night.
We all went home with new backgrounds and with our bellies full of good food. Special thanks to Shannon for hosting and for the wonderful tour of his vineyards. We were all wishing we had a place like Shannon's estate!

Since it was such a success and because so many said they couldn't make it to this one, we've decided to do another on
Sunday, June 5th.

It will again be at Shannon Mercer's studio near Lexington from 4-6pm for backgrounds and props, followed from 6pm-7pm for a covered dish dinner.

Hope more can attend and bring backgrounds and props you'd like to swap and/or sell.

We need a host! Apritl 25th Costal Meeting

Hey Everybody,

We have a great Coastal Meeting planned for April 25 but we need a host....We have the incredibly resourceful Steve Roos who has agreed to teach a class on making your own gear and show several things that he has made for his studio. We are also planning to have everyone who comes to the meeting to share a cost savings tip that they have implemented in their studio. This meeting has the potential of saving you a ton of money in your business but we don't have a location to host this meeting. Steve is coming from Hartsville so we don't want him to have to travel too far, but this IS a Coastal Meeting so we agreed the Myrtle Beach area would be a good compromise. We are hoping to get some Midlands people to come also. If anyone has some space available somewhere in the Myrtle Beach area that could host this meeting on the evening of April 25, please let us know.

Thanks...

Do you know everything about Photoshop that you need to know? Are you ready to start spending LESS time in front of the computer and getting BETTER results? Want to be in on the best productivity-enhancing and image-enhancing Photoshop secrets out there? Well we have the program for you!

Our own Corey Potter has been researching Photoshop and the most effective way to teach it for some time now and he is ready to share what he knows with a willing audience.

This program is a combined Midlands and Coastal Meeting held halfway between the two regions in Orangeburg so we are expecting a big turnout. And of course, as always, the Upstate is invited too.

We are going to start with dinner at 5pm at the Chestnut Grill in Orangeburg. 1455 Chestnut Street. The meeting will be from 6 – 8pm at Anne Westbury’s Studio in Orangeburg at 750 Russell St in Orangeburg.

Mark your calendars and we'll look forward to seeing you there!

You cant get here from there...you gotta go over yonder....

Now the truth.....if you go south on I 85 you will get off at exit 11...which is hwy 24.....turn right in the direction of Townville...go about a quarter mile just past Oakdale Bapt Church...turn right on Oakdale Rd.....go about 1 mile and turn right onto Portman Drive......I'm the 9th house on the right.....sorta down under the hill....

things to be aware of......#1 the road sign at Portman has been stolen....so you actually turn rt at the 2nd county road on Oakdale....there's just no sign...

#2 if you are using a GPS be absolutely positive that you have Portman Drive....there's more Portmans than people in Townville...

#3 have no more ideas.....other than if you're coming from Oconee county you will want to be on 24...and turn left just before you get to Oakdale Bapt church....

Costal Meeting Plans for 2011

Here is the schedule of proposed dates for Coastal Meetings this year.
We have some really good meeting topics planned and are going to
incorporate some new ideas into our regular meetings to try to:

infuse some new ideas,
inspire some new thinking, and
incite some new members.

We are trying to change our meeting date to something more regular and
generally go with the third Monday with the exceptions of April and
November to avoid Easter and Thanksgiving conflicts. Except for
March, which is pretty much confirmed to be a combined Coastal and
Midlands meeting with Corey Potter teaching Photoshop in Orangeburg at
Anne Westbury's location, we are looking for comments from anyone on
the following dates.

3/21/2011
4/18/2011 or 4/25/2011
5/16/2011
6/20/2011
no meeting due to Lamar school
8/22/2011
9/19/2011
10/17/2011
11/14/2011
unplanned as of yet

Convention FAQ's and everything else you wanted to know!

The dice are out! Its time for the PPSC 2011 Convention - February 5th - 8th. Our theme this year comes from the Casino - "All In." I know you are packing your bags and getting ready to head to Embassy Suites in Columbia, SC. and we are looking forward to a great convention!

You may have some questions about time-lines and events. As Hospitality Chair and Banquet Chair, I'll try to provide all of the details you will need here, but if you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to send me an email at becki@clarkberry.com.

Location
Embassy Suites is located off I-126 at the Greystone Blvd (Riverbanks Zoo) exit.
200 Stoneridge Drive, Columbia, SC 29210 Tel: 803-252-8700

Registration
The registration desk opens Saturday at 1:00 PM. Be sure to check in to get your registration packet full of all the information you are going to need. Convention t-shirts and raffle tickets will also be available at this time. Shirts are sold on a first come, first served basis and this year we've ordered even more "Ladies-Cut" t-shirts - they were really popular last year! Be sure to get yours early to assure you get the sizes you need!

But, what shall I wear?
Be sure to dress comfortably for all seminars as hotels can be cool at times even though you are indoors.
Saturday Night - Opening Day Casino Party - casual - come as you are!
Sunday Night - President's Reception/SuperBowl Party - dress code: Team Spirit! Wear your favorite team attire - even if they didn't make it to the Superbowl.
Monday Night - Award's Banquet - dress code: business, informal. Nice shirt and slacks are perfect.

What are we eating?
Meals will be on your own. If you are a guest at the hotel, breakfast is included each morning as well as the Manager's Reception which includes soft drinks, adult beverages (beer, wine, liquor), and snacks from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM daily.
Sunday Night - Superbowl Party - Brick Oven Pizzas, Wings & Chilli will be served.
Monday Night - Awards Banquet - the menu consists of salad, grilled filet mignon & grilled shrimp, vegetables, rolls and dessert. A cash bar will also be available.

Just for fun!
We have a Hospitality Room located in room #429 that's open Friday - Monday. This is a great place to hang out during the afternoon and evening hours. Everyone is encouraged to come hang out and enjoy this room - bring snacks, drinks (soda, water, adult beverages, etc.) and even homemade goodies! This is a great place to get to know your fellow PPSC Members even more. Last year we had such a great time in the Hospitality Room!

For even more detailed information read further:

Saturday - Print Salon starts at 9 AM. You don't want to miss watching this exciting and nerve-wracking event. Even if you don't have prints in the competition (what are you waiting for!?!?) you'll find this very educational as you listen to a panel of accredited judges score prints from photographers all across SC. Print Salon is open to all PPSC Members and the public - so feel free to invite others that are interested.

Beginning at 2 PM speaker Bill Grant begins his seminar on Video Production. With most photographers owning cameras that also record HD video, you won't want to miss what Bill has to say!

Grab a quick bite to eat then be sure to be there when Opening Day Casino Night starts at 7 PM. Dave Gilbert of PartyTime DJ's opens up the tables for a fun night for all! Come out and enjoy this fun time and socialize with other PPSC Members.

Sunday - Mark Garber and Jennifer Gilman will get the day going with their program on weddings beginning at 9 AM. After lunch, the Trade Show runs from 1 PM - 5 PM. The trade show is open to the public, so be sure to invite your friends in the industry to come check out all of the great vendors that will be here! Its great to support the vendors who support PPSC - without them, we simply could not have our convention.

At 5 PM the Annual Business Meeting will be held. (Hey, not all of the convention can be all fun.) We definitely need you there because we have a few important items to take care of like voting on the new Board of Directors.

At 6 PM its time to get your game face on as we enjoy the President's Reception and SuperBowl Party! (menu and dress details above)

Monday - The Trade Show opens back up at 9 AM and runs until Noon. Don't miss your last chance to walk through and meet with all of the great vendors who support PPSC.

At 1:30 PM Larry Lourcey will begin his seminar on The Home Studio. This will be great for all photographers to hear even if you currently have a retail location.

The evening events begin at 6:30 PM with a reception before the 7 PM Awards Banquet and Dinner. (menu and dress details above) At 9 PM Bill Grant's band Love Hudson will start playing for a fun and dance-filled evening.

Tuesday - Jeff Bowman begins his High School Seniors program at 8:30 AM and then we'll break for an early lunch around 11:30 AM. Pete Wright will begin his program on The Art of Life at 12:30 PM. Pete's program will run until around 3:30 PM and will conclude our convention for 2011.

I am looking forward to seeing you all at convention and if you haven't signed up yet, its not too late!

It's time to get "All In!"

Midlands January 18th get together

Sorry everyone, but due to weather and timing, we won't be able to reschedule the January Midlands regular meeting. We'll move the same program on Color Harmony with Suellen Holmes to March.

For anyone interested, I would like to have a Midlands dinner gathering on Tuesday, January 18th at 6:00pm at El Chico on Bush River Road. They have a meeting room where we can eat, visit and share ideas. Would be a great time to get input on things like image titles for print competition! RSVP if you can attend so I'll know how many to set up for.

In the meanwhile, PLEASE send me your suggestions for meeting topics, and also let me know if you're willing to host and/or speak at a meeting this year.

Hope to see everyone in February at the convention!

Monday January 10th Midlands Meeting

Sorry for the short notice, but the plans are finally set for our Midlands District Meeting for this month!

The meeting will be Monday, January 10th in Newberry at Debbie Turner's studio, Turner Photography and Restoration.

Suellen Holmes will be presenting a program on using color to your advantage in your work.
She will be teaching us how color harmony can make or break an image. Suellen says that learning to use color to your advantage will open up a new world in your photography. Also, color harmony is one of the most important elements in print competition, so this is a perfect follow-up meeting to tonight's upstate meeting for those interested in competition prints.
Suellen also says she has some neat tricks that she will be sharing with us, so don't miss out!

For those who can make it, we'll be having dinner at 5:30pm at Delamater's, located at 1117 Boyce Street in Newberry, just 3 doors down from the Newberry Opera House. Check out their menu at www.delamaters.com.
Debbie says they have the best she crab soup in the world!

The meeting will start at 7:00pm at Debbie's studio, located at 1103 Caldwell Street, Newberry, SC 29108. (803)276-8725.

Debbie says we need to park next door to the new library, which is across the street from the side of her studio building.
Please bring a chair if you can.

Hope to see lots of you there!
